honestly feel as if i should’ve let myself process a little more before writing this review, but here we are.
first things first, i really enjoyed hesse’s prose and imagery, and just his overall way of articulating things. he was able to make minute, mundane activities and objects seem so much more purposeful and it shines a sort of gratitude to everyday life.
the way that this novel discusses religion is very interesting to me. it shows both the importance of having a belief system, but acknowledges that there is no “right” religion or belief. hesse depicts the impact of religion on individuals and on society, as well as the pressure it can have on an individual when their personal beliefs do not align with those of the supposed majority or their behaviours. another relevant and important aspect that he bought up in regard to religion, is that many people will blame their faults or bigotted views on their religion in order to justify it, when it is no excuse.
lastly, the relationship between sinclair and eva was kind of icky to me. the novel could’ve been a five if that wasn’t a thing, and the whole freudian ‘dude-wants-to-screw-his-mother-and-milfs’ vibe. very much threw me off.

‘’When someone needs something and then finds what he needs, it is not chance that has put it in his hands: rather he himself, his own longing and need, leads him to it.’’
I MAY HAVE JUST READ MY MOST FAVORITE BOOK OF ALL TIME. My heart is so full. I still can’t fathom enough how a book that has been written more than a hundred years ago could resonate with my thoughts and feelings this much. Wow. This is only the start of my adoration towards Hesse’s works.

I enjoyed Siddharta very much. This is quite a different type of book. I feel as though it is one that a person could read at 16, at 36, at 72 get new and different understanding each time.
