*Disclaimer: this novel does have a theme about religion vs philosophy, because of this my review does focus on that theme a lot. If you are not comfortable with this discussion or have no interest in reading about this dynamic then my review may not be the one for you. And that is okay. There are other reviews that do not touch on this topic. And this book can still be read and you can focus more on the coming of age story then religion vs philosophy. As it is a book that appeals to a multitude of audiences. So I still recommend this novel. I hope you have/had an amazing day. Take care

This coming-of-age story was strangely uplifting, the main character's spiritual awakening is not a theme I come across very often and it was very interesting to read. I could also feel the tension of a soon-to-come war. A very good book overall.

There's a certain homoerotic aspect to this book that reminds me so much of Dorian Gray, and sadly we're never going to know if Demian and Emil were truly gay for each other. In all seriousness, this was a harrowing and contemplative piece of work, especially for its time.

I wanted only to live in accord with the promptings which came from my true self. Why was that so very difficult?

I really enjoy books that make my brain melts and this book did just that. All the symbolism in this book made my brain think so much but I love it.

Essentially, this book is about finding oneself and what one wants to be. It’s about self-discovery and about the struggles and torments of youth.

My first 1 star review ever.
I’ve heard a lot of praise for this book. It’s not worth the hype. I lost interest about half way through, but I fought through it till the end hoping that it gets better. It didn’t. Not in my opinion.

Such a beautiful book!

Am I the only one who sobbed at the last page? Ohh, the tears!
Welcome to my top 5 favourite writers, [a:Hernann Hesse|5243153|Hernann Hesse|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-632230dc9882b4352d753eedf9396530.png]. And this is just my first book of him ;) I've heard its not even one of his best works, so I can only imagine how genius the rest of his books are.

I'm finding very hard to write a decent review to this book...... You see, Hernann Hesse is very philosophical, but you don't need to agree with him a 100% to like this book. One just can't simply ignore the brilliance of the thoughts we are given here.

Well, I can't seem to find the words to express why is this book so good, so I'll just leave you a few quotes:

“I live in my dreams — that's what you sense. Other people live in dreams, but not in their own. That's the difference.”

“Love must not entreat,' she added, 'or demand. Love must have the strength to become certain within itself. Then it ceases merely to be attracted and begins to attract.”

“I have no right to call myself one who knows. I was one who seeks, and I still am, but I no longer seek in the stars or in books; I'm beginning to hear the teachings of my blood pulsing within me."

“You've never lived what you are thinking, and that isn't good. Only the ideas we actually live are of any value.”

"He had loved and he had found himself. Most people love to lose themselves."

A read I really enjoyed. Made me question a lot about life and what's right and wrong!
