This was recommended to me by a friend without much context, and I read through it and with only the information that Hesse’s prose was amazing. I found that to be very true and a fact that would carry me through this tale of nihilism and identity with a hypnotic grace.
I have to say immediately that I picked up on the homoeroticism immediately. The ‘mark’ they speak of can so easily be interpreted as a metaphor for queerness, along with many events and encounters like Sinclair’s mentorship with Pistorious. His journey to self realization relies on masculine figures who release and justify his desires, showing him a world of self determined morality and happiness beyond the structures of pleasant society. Sinclair yearns and needs connection physically and seeks it in these two as well as Frau Eva.
As for themes of religion, Hesse offers broad interpretation and alternative routes of spirituality I wouldn’t have expected from a European writer of the time. His expressions of dual faced deities and forms of worship and enlightenment were fascinating and give the scope of true character development, letting a reader believe the same is possible for them (though perhaps not through this dark side shown by Demian). There’s an understated coincidence or sixth sense to many of the people Sinclair meets, calling to a higher power perhaps influencing his path to find the people he needs.
I really enjoyed this and I feel like I can’t fully sum up my entire thoughts on it. It’s a definite recommend and for sure will be a reread at some point.

Erstmal tut's mir total leid, dass ich das Lieblingsbuch der Jugend meines Vaters anscheinend nicht halb so sehr enjoyen konnte wie er, aber Geschmäcker gehen natürlich auseinander.
Puh. Ich glaube, es ist einfach nicht mein Stil, deswegen auch sehr subjektive Bewertung. Ich habe auf jeden Fall viel Respekt vor dem Spirituellen, das in diesem Roman statt irgendeiner besonderen narrativen Ausschmückung im Mittelpunkt steht. Aber ich denke gerade dann muss die spirituelle Message, die vermittelt wird, einer Lebensansicht des*der Leser*in ähneln, damit man diesen Roman wirklich genießen und etwas aus ihm ziehen kann. Für mich war es leider so, dass ich vielen Aspekten dieser Lebens- und Geistesansicht einfach nicht zustimme, weswegen es für mich insgesamt nicht so gut funktioniert hat.
Also ja, wie gesagt, sehr subjektive Bewertung - ich empfehle trotzdem jedem, sich mal in den Roman reinzutasten, sich auch mehr über den Roman, Hesse generell und die Entstehungsgeschichte des Romans zu informieren, und für sich selbst zu entscheiden, ob er für einen funktioniert.
(Habe mich gegen eine Sterne-Bewertung entschieden, da es für mich keinen Sinn macht, einen Roman aus einem ganz anderen soziokulturellen Kontext nach selbstempfundener Qualität zu bewerten.)

Sinceramente, empecé este libro con la idea de que era sobre autodescubrimiento, auconstrucción, e introductorio para la autoreflexión filosófica, y terminé pensando en él como el autodescubrimiento de un chico bisexual con toques sobrenaturales y filosóficos JAJA.
Eso sí, no le quita que me encantó.
El autoconcepto de Sinclair al principio se basa en lo que las demás personas piensan de él, y gracias a Demian (de quien quedó flechadísimo desde el principio), descubre que no está mal ser diferente y ver la vida de manera distinta al resto. Sin embargo, como todo buen adolescente, se separa de su crush y cae en un abismo de depresión y crisis existenciales, las cuales logra superar gracias a un enamoramiento a primera vista de una chica que ni su nombre conoció (lol), para luego volver a tener "contacto" con su crush Demian y un nuevo guía, de quien aprende muchísimo sobre Abraxas y su filosofía dual, significando un punto clave en el desarrollo de Sinclair.
Acá es donde la cosa se pone bien rara, con Sinclair obsesionado tanto con Demian como de la madre del mismo (porque si no se queda con el vato, se queda con la señora, pero a la familia Demian no va a renunciar... como cierto lobito, pero al revés), el ave que nace del huevo que es el mundo que caerá en mil pedazos y demás, cosas que no diré porque es una experiencia que debes vivir por tu cuenta como en Arcoiris.
En fin, que sí está bueno y sí me cumplió las expectativas pero con toques homoeróticos que no me esperaba. Excelente servicio.
