Three Pines has always been a safe haven for its residents providing peace and comfort from the outside world. When over-imaginative nine year old Laurent Lapage claims that there is a giant gun hidden in the forest and a beast is guarding it, everyone just shakes it off as another one of his grand stories. It isn't until his body is found in a ditch that Armand Gamache wonders if he wasn't telling the truth and calls in the Surete to investigate and no one can believe what they uncover. This installment seemed as grand as one of Laurent's wild stories, but to find out there was some historical truth to it was frightening. It wasn't my favorite in the series, but it was a solid addition. 4/5🌟

I love Louise Penny's Gamache series and finished this one on a long train ride through Italy, occasionally looking up to gaze out the window and lose myself in the sometimes dramatic scenery.

Maybe because of this I didn't really feel as though I was fully engaged in the book, although Penny's end note was quite a wake up and made me think about the story line a little more carefully.

Perfect travel fodder. Louise Penny is a reliable distraction.
