Separate Beds

LaVyrle Spencer

3.5 AVERAGE

I loved Spencer's Morning Glory almost despite its summary (dead hooker, abused widow as female lead, and a woman bent on having the hero). Happily, it bloomed into a quiet, gentle romance that worked super well for me and is now one of my comfort reads. I picked up this LaVyrle Spencer without reading the summary because I decided she would be one of my auto-read authors. Well... not in the case of Separate Beds. This is a tale about an accidental pregnancy where the hero was dating someone else when he slept with the heroine :| Yeah not super impressed with him. Didn't like it flat out. I'll have to be more carefully when I pick up a Spencer book.

Passed on to me from Mom.

Loved one of her other books and thought I’d give this one a go. Pretty immediately realized I didn’t like it and DNF. A lot of anti-abortion references.

I don't understand how this anti-abortion propaganda ended up in my holds. Is there another book called Separate Beds?

-- update: there is another book called Separate Beds, about tuberculosis in Canada. played myself

oldie but goodie

First time reading Spencer’s work.
I liked her writing and I was never bored.
As for the main characters, I wanted to tear my hair out.
That’s why I gave her 4 stars. Spencer stirred my emotions through her writing and I love and respect the heck out of her magic.

Back to the main characters that drove me crazy…
Clay…oh, Clay, especially you my man.
Clay is a good person when it comes to friendship, but beyond that he is a hot mess.
Catherine was extremely guarded and I can see why. Bringing in a therapist would have been a boon to this story. Catherine has a huge character arc that was believable and triumphant to her own self worth and happiness. Too bad she was hot for Clay.
This was not a believable HEA for me. But I like Spencer’s grit and already have placed another book of hers on hold through my library.

Possible TW’s: emotional/mental and physical abuse by parent, alcoholism, cheating

Considering how much I disliked Clay (like come on man, use your head sometimes), I was surprised at how much I was rooting for them to be together at the end.
