I always enjoy P.G. Wodehouse and stories about Bertie Wooster and Jeeves. Sadly, Jeeves is missing from most of this book and I sorely missed him. The book still has amusing antics and the thread of meanness that makes these books so cutting, but this one wasn't quite as amusing as others that I've read. I also don't think this book is the best introduction to these characters--it's better if you have some prior knowledge from reading some of the other stories even though the actual plot is stand-alone. Recommended for folks looking to read more Jeeves stories but not to those who are reading their first one.

Listened to on Audible.

Absolutely hilarious. I didn't like Ian Carmichael's interpretation of Bertie Wooster at first but as the book went on I actually fell in love with it. The way he portrays Bertie as a bumbling, stuttering buffoon is ingenious and his other voices were just as top notch. Such a pity he is no longer with us.

I'm off to buy the complete collection. Pip! Pip!

I did quite enjoy this little outing with Jeeves & Wooster. Off goes Jeeves to a vacation, and no sooner has he departed for a breather does Bertie find that he is to be married, having the word from Bobbie Wickham's mother that he should look in the paper.

So follows a whirlwind of action with Bertie going down to his Aunt Dahlia's place as he's been requested (and, of course, to find out what the devil is going on), only to find that the engagement is a sham. Bobbie wants to marry his good friend Kipper and thinks by tricking her mother into believing she really wants Bertie, when she springs Kipper on the older lady, she'll gladly receive him instead.

Through miscommunication and misunderstanding, she and Kipper were engaged (before her announcement to Bertie) then unengaged (a fit of passion that she immediately regretted) then unengaged for REAL (she having found him kissing another woman!). Kipper was subsequently unengaged from her and then engaged to another, Phyllis, but it was a sham to keep another fellow (Wilbert) from proposing to Phyllis while Phyllis wanted him to propose and--see how it all gets tangled? It's a wonder how anyone can keep all the threads up, let alone work THROUGH them.

Throw in a little spying on a thought-to-be-but-isn't playboy by a butler-who-isn't-a-butler-but-rather-a-loony-catcher, some good-hearted pilfering of an item thought to be stolen but was actually paid for in good conscience, and add a dash of "if any of this falls through, so does a deal that Bertie's Uncle Tom has been trying to broker and thus goes thousands? of pounds". Don't forget to bung in the fact that Kipper wrote a scathing review of a book his old headmaster Upjohn published which threatened to see him hauled to court for libel (owing to some humourous remarks thrown in at the last moment, unbeknownst to Kipper, by Bobbie).

Of course Bertie hares it as quickly as he's able to fetch Jeeves and his powerful brain, and through some deft working Jeeves comes to the inevitable solution that wins out. Not without a little light-handed stealing and blackmailing, but everything turns out for the best.

I just love to see all the threads come together in these stories, and it's marvellous to see how certain actions and certain words both bring matters to a head and see them through to calm completion. Just an excellent (and very amusing!!) little book.

At this stage in the game, however, I would definitely recommend that people have at least a tenuous working knowledge of the Jeeves series. It at least makes things easier when you have recollections of the characters and past instances mentioned.

Highly entertaining! It does have a sadly limited amount of Jeeves, but the level of shenanigans is about as normal, so it was still quite good.

Fun tale. A nice way to pass the time.

Another fun if not spectacular episode in the life of Bertie and Jeeves. The plots of these merge into each other in my head, so I thought for a while that I had already read this, but in the end I don't think I had - it was the presence of the cow creamer (and another engagement plot) that had me wondering!

I'm sure, by listening to this rather than reading it, I missed loads of word play, but it was still clever and fun (but not enough to make me read more).
