Riveting and haunting story of a woman and her eight year old son escaping mob violence in Mexico. So well written and so sad

Very heartbreaking account of a mother and son fleeing Acapulco. So often the immigrant’s journey is unspoken, clearly this is why.

The author is very descriptive and makes you feel like you are there in the story. As a Mom I can relate to how Lydia would do anything for her son Luca. I find it kind of ironic and irritating that this author has gotten death threats over this book when she basically wrote about this very thing happening to journalists who write about the cartels.

Easy to listen to the reader.

The story is well told although the end feels rushed, as if the author wanted to assure us of what horrible things one can experience and How it effect our entire being. I respect and understand the controversy that this book caused. Why wasn’t the story told in this international way by those who lived through it? Feels like I would be even more moved if that nuance was in it.

This book was very good. Fast paced and well developed. The characters were enjoyable and easy to sympathize with. The author did an excellent job of getting in the head space of an adult woman and a young boy as they both go through a horrific experience. I was hoping for a little more from the ending, but I still think it’s 5 star-ish.
