Lydia and her son Luca are the heart of this story of love, loss, and the brutal reality of drug cartel violence in Mexico. By centering a middle class family,  Cummins makes it clear no one is safe when a community is taken over and draws the stark contrast between their previous lives and their new ones traveling to the United States border alongside other migrants. The journey is more harrowing than most of us are aware of, and we get to know other stories through the people they meet along the way. 
A heart-pounding look at the fact that the people anxious to cross the border are individuals with complex histories,  not a mob of faceless "invaders" as some political leaders have claimed.

I started this audiobook on Libby after recognizing the cover from multiple Goodreads lists over the last few years. I didn't read the summary or know what it was about when I started. After hearing the initial graphic content, I decided to look more into the title and its author. 

Countless other reviews and websites have covered the full issues with this book. But since this author identifies as white and is attempting to cover a very sensitive Mexican/Latinx perspective, I will not be finishing this title.

This was a read that had me anxiously wanting to know what happens next. It ignited more empathy in me but was also so hard to read. Trauma after trauma occurs but the characters are so resilient and lovable and relatable. I wouldn’t recommend this book to everyone, but it is worth your time.
