Penguins are the best. Here our penguin friend decides that it wants to learn how to fly, and some unexpected consequences ensue. It's a perfect book for anyone who ever wanted their own penguin (like me). It wasn't as strong for me as the previous installments in this series, but it's quite entertaining.
For: lovers of penguins; readers wanting a book about friendship.
Possible red flags: some readers may worry about what kind of behavior this encourages; getting separated.

The author is very hit and miss for me. I don't like their art much. Some of their ideas are really good though. This one was kind of a stretch, but who doesn't want people to exceed their limitations, to stretch themselves. I didn't think this one would work. And really it doesn't have the best writing. But it just works. And the friendship between boy and penguin is quite clear.

Our dear friends the little boy in the striped shirt and the penguin from Lost and Found are back, playing backgammon and shouting through tin can telephones at each other. Being boys. When the penguin decides he wants to fly, the boy is as supportive as ever, providing research and technology assistance. But they get separated on a fact-finding mission to the zoo, and the penguin falls in with a fellow who wants to shoot him out of a cannon.

Oliver Jeffers is my new favorite children's book illustrator. I love his simple yet expressive style! The story was fun, too!

This is, apparently, the fourth book Oliver Jeffers has written about "the boy." It's a heartwarming story of friendship - between this boy and his penguin buddy - and the penguin's desire to try out flying. Very cute, very Oliver Jeffers. Must find others about "the boy!"
