If you’ve been following me for a while, you know I’m a sucker for a Silicon Valley founder story. Max Chafkin impressively adds to the list of must-reads in that category.
There are a lot of eccentric founders—and then there’s Peter Thiel.
Lonely, vengeful, and “full MAGA” are just a few of the descriptors found within.
A fascinating and sometimes shocking story about a man who doesn’t fit into any neat and tidy category.

Should be required reading for any fan of Zero to One. It gives so much more context at the life's philosophy behind the arguments.
It’s really hard to think of a more unsympathetic protagonist. And this in a book which also features the likes Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Donald Trump and Roger Köppel.
Time and again I am surprised how anyone can call peoples like Thiel "intellectuals" (this is not meant as a criticism of Chafkin). What they have to offer really amounts to nothing more than juvenile grandstanding; how anyone with a even a bit of intellectual curiosity – and, probably most important of all, a certain wit – can be attracted by these shallow ideas (I actually hesitate to even call them ideas) is really baffling to me.

How do the tech moguls influence politics? This book tells us a lot about the history of Silicon Valley. It also explains why the American political landscape is more divided than ever. Peter Thiel has his tendrils deeply embedded in American politics. I found it surprising. A must read for anyone who wants a better understanding of our Democracy and why it’s on the skids.
The first half of the book is good; but starts to fall off the rails quick when we get in to politics. Lots of conjecture, misspellings, missing words didn't help. Quite the contrarian character.

Peter Thiel’s skill with personal branding had me convinced he was a smart, principled, visionary type. But this book removed the wool from my eyes and gave me new perspective that changed my mind. I now believe Thiel to be smart, UNprincipled, and lacking vision for anything but his own enrichment — sociopath, possibly. Good read, and admirable in its courage, given Thiel’s litigiousness.
