i really really really didnt like this book. i thought it was repetitive, derogotary towards women, and generally had little purpose or plot being the fact that it was basically porn.
A bit rapey for my tastes and I got pretty bored at times but it gets a bonus star for being nearly 300-years-old.
Interesting that the narrator is EXTREMELY repulsed and calls the cops when she encounters two gay men, but meanwhile enjoys prostitution, orgies, S&M, adultery, lesbians...
Warning! Don't be fooled that since this book was published in 1748 that it will be mild erotica. It's not. This book could make fans of 50 Shades a bit nervous. This is kind of a strange book and still not quite sure what I think. I'm definitely surprised at how graphic it is with the time it was written. And it is about a young (fictional) girl, so beware.
I am sure this was shocking at the time, but it is very weird reading about the pleasures of the bedroom in a very descriptive way without using the names of the body parts used or the more crude words we have become used to in more modern reads. Not my sort of read I'm afraid, the language took a while to get used to and I just found myself bored.
There's something really creepy about a grown man writing about the sexual adventures/awakening of a fifteen-year-old girl.
I do think that the historical context is interesting, though, so it gets a star for that.
