It started out strong, but it turns out it was just a prophetic dream. When the protagonist flicks back to the present, her day is pretty boring (up until Page 17, at least). I particularly disliked the romance element later on. It felt like there was too much showing-not-telling, and the "women's secrets" mentions felt vaguely unsettling.
The text formatting felt odd, like the text formatting of a pocket Bible.

*Thank you NetGalley and P. Djèlí Clark for the ARC of this novel.

This fantasy captured me and wouldn't let go. I fell in love with the world and the magic within it from the start. It is the first in a series and is filled with relatable, complex and interesting characters. It is a solid story with plenty of room to expand and grow. World building and character development are intertwined in this first book and I absolutely love the imagery and the character development throughout the novel.

Ran out of time, and interest not super strong.

I really struggled with the narrators voice for the main character and I also really struggled to pay attention to this book. I think people might really enjoy it tho and my opinion is not a great one to go off of.
