Not for the weak minded... this book is disturbing, but in a good way.  A really entertaining book about a really complicated set of issues.   This is a dark comedy is a way to make you smile through "darkness and absurdity of life" (author's quote).  I find the words of the author's note sums it up "“Fiction is when research meets compassion.  I believe that this is why facts don’t change people’s minds, but stories do”

This book is a "fantasy" about female empowerment in a patriarchal society. Readers need to have the sophistication to understand that the absurdity presented here is a way to grant people agency in a society that doesn't value them. It can leave the reader with an existential discomfort with the issues that it raises.

Bandit Queens - Parini Shroff

Bandit Queens is a dark, literary comedy set in a small village in India. It follows Geeta, who is quite happy to let the rest of the town believe the rumours that she murdered her husband because she just wants to be left alone. But things get more complicated when another woman in the village asks her for help with murdering her own husband.

Although a “comedy”, this novel has so much depth to it. It deals a lot with themes of domestic abuse, the trauma that women suffer at the hands of men, and the importance of sisterhood.

My main criticism of this was that it took a while for me to get into, it was quite a slow start and I didn’t really feel invested until about half way through, but once it picked up I was hooked.

But other than that I loved this. It would be a great one for a book club or a buddy read, I feel like there’s so much to discuss about this story and I would recommend to pretty much everyone (please look at the trigger warnings though).

this book was funny, smart, heartbreaking, and heartwarming. parini shroff absolutely knocked it out of the park.

There is evidence of all of these triggers but essentially all of it gets avenged or is discussed regarding how unfair it is. No characters performing these triggers fully gets away with anything. That said, our core group of characters also do plenty of awful things. It’s a dark comedy with murders. Brace yourself.

An incredible celebration of womanhood & discussion of systematic and cultural oppression. Hilarious, charming, snarky, and empowering. I often found myself finishing characters sentences ;)
