Challenging but important read. Poetic writing which got tiring to read but it was beautiful.

I haven’t read a book this steeped in trauma since A Little Life. However, any direct comparisons to that book would be a discredit. I honestly feel uncomfortable reviewing a book deeply centered in the lives experiences of so many people. But I think the important point is, this is beautifully written. The characters are so well drawn. This read is just as important as it is fulfilling. I highly recommend going into this somewhat blind in terms of plot but CHECK THE TRIGGER WARNINGS.

I was pulled in right away and didn’t want to put it down! This was an emotional and powerful read about the adultification of Black girls, police violence, and trying to find pieces of joy while doing your best to survive. So although it was a fast read, it wasn’t an easy topic to read about.

I loved the writing style; Mottley really makes you stop and think as well as appreciate the small beauties in her storytelling! There were many interesting discussions that make you think about the failing justice system, gender, race, and class. Powerful book that will make you sad then angry.

After Nightcrawling, I will automatically be reading anything Mottley publishes in the future!! This was easily my favorite for the month and a favorite for the year (I may even be picking it for my Book of the Year winner once I collect all my thoughts) ❤️

This book burns with a righteous fury and deeply affecting pathos. A searing indictment of systemic racism and classism, it centers a teenage girl who turns to survival sex work only to find herself taken advantage of by those who, in theory, are supposed to protect her. Also the prose is stunning with Mottley's experience as a poet paying off greatly. Additionally, it's written in first person, and the way the protagonist's voice shifts throughout the story from shut down and survival focused, to making room for her anger and grief, is just stunning.
