"Nightcrawling" by Leila Mottley is a poignant and powerful debut novel that delves into the complexities of youth, survival, and the pursuit of justice in a gritty urban landscape. Set in Oakland, California, the story follows the life of 17-year-old Kiara, who finds herself navigating a world filled with challenges and harsh realities. Mottley's narrative is both raw and lyrical, capturing the struggles of a young Black girl grappling with poverty, familial responsibilities, and societal neglect.

This was a terrifying story told about a teenage black girl who is trying to make ends meet, support herself, her elder brother and the neighbor's kid, all alone with no help. She ends up falling into prostitution and cops take advantage of her and in the end, in a tale as old as time, they get off scot-free, while her life devolves into storm after storm.
