Bei diesem Buch gefiel mir vor allem der Anfang sehr gut. Die Freundschaft der drei Männer wird von Remarque sehr schön dargestellt, und ich hatte gehofft, dass er sich auch weiterhin auf diese drei konzentrieren würde.
Aber bald widmet sich das Buch hauptsächlich der Liebesgeschichte. Diese ist zwar auch sehr berührend, vor allem das Ende hat mich dann doch emotional mehr gepackt, als dass ich wahrscheinlich zugeben möchte; trotzdem kam die anfängliche Begeisterung nicht mehr in dem Umfang zur Geltung.
Trotzdem ist es ein weiteres schön geschriebenes und philosophisch-nachdenkliches Werk aus Remarques Feder. Ich mag seine Gedankengänge, seine Beschreibungen und seine feinfühlige Weise, das Leben zu beschreiben. Dieser Mensch hat viel erlebt und in seinen Werken teilt er Erfahrungen und Einsichten mit uns. Wundervoll.

This book got good in the last chapter. If it was like this all throughout it would be an easy 5 star, but it just wasn’t it.
The parts with Pat were good and emotional, everything else was SO FUCKING UNNECESSARY.

If you cut all the bullshit with cars and alcoholism, homophobia, sexism, racism then this would be a better book.

Read this for school. This book gets a higher rating than I normally give books, which I've had to read for my literature class.
Honestly, I don't want to explain my thoughts. I feel like me reading this book is kind of a sign. I felt very seen and understood for some moments. It broke my heart when I got near the end and those people died. One of their deaths even made me cry, because it felt very relatable.
The overall theme was heartbreaking. Everyone suffered, many died and even more were struggling and starving. But we also got to see the happy and fun moments.
One thing I would like to mention is the fact that Remarque's characters have sass and humor. There were many moments where I found myself laughing or amused. AND THE INSULTS! I felt the friendship's closeness and love, it was actually really cute, even though every one of those people were traumatised.
