I read this book in the perfect time in my life. Before this, I was reading A game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin and that had put me in such an irresistible reading slump it took me 1 month and a half to finish it. And then I picked this, and I completely fell in love. What makes this book so special is the fact that it never gets boring. You can read for hours and still feel like you didn't have enough. Even though this is an incredibly sad story, it's completely worth the time and effort because it will not leave you disappointed. I feel like Remarque is the John Green of the twentieth century. But now let's talk about the characters...They're so good they leave me completely speechless and desperately wanting to cry, because I know I'll never find any friends as loyal as the three comrades. You can clearly see that they truly CARE and have each other's back even in the hardest of times. Not only this, but the romantic couple in this story is the most beautiful thing I've ever read/experienced. As I said, the end is going to be tragic, and that's something you can't avoid, but if it had been a happily ever after, it wouldn't have left me the impact that it did. It wouldn't have been the powerful story that it was. Because sometimes things need to be tragic in order to be good.

The last hundred pages were a long moving agony. It could be a bit shorter.
Otherwise good old Remarque.

My favorite Remarque--completely heartbreaking. Also reputedly the (loose) basis for my favorite war movie, The Deer Hunter.

I love Remarque! I lacked a little bit war theme typical for him, but still it is a beautiful book.
