Fun and entertaining. The use of the backstories to round out the plot and make sense of certain things in the present was very interesting and well done.

I'd never read this book before, but had heard great things about it and have seen the movie. I think this is a great classic that didn't feel dated or childish at all. The language is obviously not overly complex since it's middle grade, but the plot doesn't feel boring or too "kiddish." I think this is a great book that someone of any age or background can enjoy. Definitely made me want to rewatch the movie, so I'll probably do that soon! Originally read this as a "palette cleanser" of sorts between long series, but I'm glad I picked it up. :)

I enjoyed the dark humor and surprisingly serious topics in this middle grade classic, which include the absurdity of our punitive "justice" system, racism, illiteracy and houselessness.

The novel is pretty short and wraps up very quickly, leaving the reader to "fill in the holes" at the end. With a slightly higher page count some of the themes could have been explored a little more.
