This easy reading novel is a story about a young orphaned girl on her journey to America setting sail on the Titanic. The writing style are diary entries made written by the main character, Margaret Ann Brady. When she was young her father died in a work accident, then shortly after her mother grew ill and passed away. Her and her older brother were left to take care of each other. They had basically no money, so no money = no food. Some days they managed to find scraps while others they were forced to just go hungry. Knowing he is unable to care for his sister, William (her brother) takes her to a orphanage where he knows she will be well taken care for. At age 13, after being there for more than 5 years, Margaret gets the chance of a lifetime, she gets to go to America and accompany a wealthy lady, Mrs. Carstairs and her dog, Florence. The book follows the days leading up to the journey, sailing on the Titanic, surviving the sinking, a few days after, and then an epilogue on the rest of her life. I feel as if this is a very good book to give historical context on the sinking. It would be easier for some students to read this book and learn the history then just reading a textbook. At the end of the book the author give facts and knowledge on the Titanic and includes pictures as well.

I forgot how good this series was. Very interesting to read this now that I’ve been to some of the London locations mentioned. Had me tearing up in the Heathrow airport.

I enjoy books about the Titanic, and this one was one of the good ones. It is also one of the particularly sad ones in the Dear America series.

I decided to re-read this in honor of the anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. Voyage on the Great Titanic is a classic in the Dear America series and probably the reason I like tragic stories so much. As such, I think this one is a bit of an acquired taste. You're likely to either love or hate it. As for me, I still love it even after all these years. It made me cry just as much as it ever has.

almost couldn’t believe how boring this (fictional) firsthand account of one of the greatest tragedies was but then i remembered it’s a middle grade book. anyways
