Great fantasy to recommend to junior high and high school students---unique story but enough familiar fantasy items (automatons, special ink tattoos, evil leaders, absent parents) to keep readers comfortable.

Glad to finally cross this off my tbr! 👏🏽
The storyline line was alright: sister looking for her brother and on the way she gets involved in a rebellion. I wasn’t a fan of fmc actions near the end tbh.
The fmc was also queer, specifically on the asexual spectrum, which always love reading about because it’s personally relatable to me🖤💜🤍
Although, I did have an issue with her ‘love’ interest being nonhuman — and I say that because they compared the significance of her relationship with Zara and Dane and also her brother and Rudy. Seems like her relationship is only plausible with someone not human/other…

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. As someone who reads a large number of romance novels annually the asexual main character and her automaton friend was a breath of fresh air. The author Emily Victoria painted a beautiful picture of a world full of magic, pirates, and revolutionaries.
The book didn’t grab me and I realized if I continued, I would end up in a reading slump. It’s not bad, just not for me.
Some good characters, great diversity of representation, plot was missing something that but can't quite place. May just be better suited for younger readers.

Very weak 2.
I went into this book not knowing anything about it except what the summary said... but the summary basically said everything. There are better reviews of this book here so I won't go into it that much, but basically: everything felt weak and flat. I didn't care about anyone in this book. Not that the characters are unlovable, they're just.... not lovable. They're like the plot, weak and flat and oh so boring. And they do not progress AT ALL. The villain was a joke. I wrote better villains at 10 years old. Jerry is a better villain to Tom than the magistrate.
And also. Gods. The last 100 pages were The Worst 100 pages I've ever read. Had I not read the 350 pages before the last 30 pages, I would have simply given up reading. This was horrendous.
I thought of adding a .5 star for the aroace character. But then I thought of how during the entire book, her thought process was "I don't know what it's like. I will never know what it's like. *watches two people kiss*." So no. I am not adding a .5 star.

There's no reason for this book to have split POV. The female main character, Karis, adds little to the story. Alix, the star of the book, should have been the point of view character the whole time, as his experiences were the only things keeping me in this book.
