I'd heard about this series, but didn't know anything about it. I did end up hate-reading (it didn't start out that way!) all six of the "Touch of Darkness" books that this book gets compared to, and the main things that I've seen have been that this book has more spice and less plot but is written better than ToD. First off, 100000% this book is written better than ToD, but this is still not literature. It definitely has more spice of a kinkier variety, but I sat through three books of the Hades half of ToD that was way less tasteful (I can't get over the interest in "ball slapping").

"Neon Gods" felt in the tradition of the singular romance novel series where each book is about one couple within a larger world (and it is - looks like Psyche is up next). It is an easy read, and I ended up finishing it quickly. No, it doesn't have a whole heck of a lot of plot, but I liked this Hades more, and the concept of The Thirteen vs them being actual gods was neat. If you like a quick, kinky, romance novel with a darker flavor and some nods to Greek mythology, you'll be entertained.

*I will note that I started this book out with the audiobook but switched over to the paperback because I did not like the readers. They had a reader for each perspective, but then in their respective chapters they would do imitations of the other instead of just having the other voice actor read the dialogue. Took me right out, especially in the spicy scenes. Didn't have a problem once I switched to the paperback.

This series was highly recommended to me by all of the algorithms, and I've liked some of Katee Robert's other works, but this was not for me at all.

I’m unfamiliar with Katee Robert’s other novels. Truthfully, the reason why I chose to read Neon Gods is because the story is a spicy spin on the Greek Myth of Hades and Persephone. So, I started reading this story with no expectations. Persephone finds out that she is betrothed to Zeus. This version is a ruthless power hungry, known killer who made a deal with Demeter. Demeter who was thinking only for herself obviously. To make a long story short, Persephone steps out to get some air with one of her sisters ( Callisto, I think) because this new revelation is a lot to digest., Persephone runs off while her sister runs back  inside to retrieve her purse. She is tailed by one of Zeus’ minions. The only place where she can seek refuge is across the bridge between Olympus and the Underworld right into the arms of Hades.

Hades who reluctantly takes her in knowing that this decision will start a war at some point with Zeus. Persephone’s public perception is that she’s chaste but she’s not. An plan is created to publicly defile her carnally in one of Hades’ playrooms and she agrees knowing the consequences. One thing that she doesn’t take into account is falling in love with Hades.

My rating for this book is four stars out of five. I am willing to read any and every retelling of the Hades and Persephone myth. This Gods in this story are human’s taking up each mantle but everything is about perception.

This book did have some very interesting sexy elements but I feel like the plot was a little thin and rushed. There were also repetitive thoughts between the two main characters about how they want to be together but can’t/shouldn’t be, I rolled my eyes to myself at one point because it got fairly redundant. I was hoping for more character development and insight but for me it barely scraped the surface. I also had a lot of spelling and grammar errors in my copy which threw me off.
