The House Beyond the Dunes is a well written story that’s intriguing and draws you in quickly. The storyline isn’t overly predictable and the ending wraps things up nicely. Overall a great read with interesting characters and a few twists that kept me guessing.
Had I not figured it out as quickly as I did I would’ve given it five stars.

Mary Burton's "The House Beyond the Dunes" presents an intriguing premise that initially captures the reader's attention. However, despite its potential, the execution of the story ultimately falls short, leaving a somewhat underwhelming reading experience.
The setting of the book, with its mysterious house and the secrets it harbors, holds great promise. The atmosphere is well-established, drawing the reader into the haunting beauty of the dunes. The protagonist, while flawed, is relatable, and her determination to uncover the truth adds a layer of suspense to the narrative.
However, the pacing of the plot is uneven with moments of suspense diluted by slow-moving scenes. The story lacks a consistent sense of urgency, which hinders the overall momentum. Additionally, some plot points feel forced or predictable, taking away from the impact of the twists and turns that do occur.
The character development is also a mixed bag. While the protagonist is reasonably fleshed out, other characters remain underdeveloped, lacking the depth needed to truly engage the reader. Their motivations and actions sometimes feel inconsistent, making it difficult to fully invest in their journeys.
Despite these shortcomings, Burton's writing style is competent, with descriptive passages that paint a vivid picture of the surroundings. The author's ability to create a haunting atmosphere is commendable, and the inclusion of historical elements adds an interesting layer to the story.
Overall, "The House Beyond the Dunes" offers a promising premise that unfortunately fails to reach its full potential. While the atmosphere and setting are captivating, the uneven pacing and underdeveloped characters prevent the story from truly shining. Nevertheless, fans of atmospheric mysteries may still find some enjoyment in this novel.

I loooved this book. With the NC influence and the psychology theme, it was right up my alley. Twist and turns thought out.
The story was decent, though somewhat predictable. My main issue, however, is with the chapters meant to be Stevie’s diary entries. They don’t feel like diaries—they read more like a typical first-person narrative. The level of detail is overly polished, and they’re written in the present tense rather than the past tense, which you’d expect from genuine diary entries. I’m not sure why this bothers me so much, but it really does.
