I really enjoyed this book, I read it in one sitting. I was glad that she Ava portrayed the pain and healing process that Holden was going through as an injured military man. It wasn't something that was part of the story but essentially brushed off at the same time as can be done sometimes.

Makenzie and Holden had a lot of history and they took the time to get to know one another again after their time apart. The one thing that seemed out of character for him was each time he gave up easily when something seemingly got in the way of him and Makenzie having a relationship. How he thought a man she was arguing with was her boyfriend and just gave up and went home. He didn't fight for what he knew he wanted, he didn't talk to her about it. But yet when he knew he had a daughter he asked the questions he brought it up he didn't give up. The up front guy is the guy I took him to be, not one that walked away from the issues. But we do get to see him grow a lot throughout this book to that just really makes him lovable.

I liked this book and recommend it.

This is more than just a brother’s best friend & secret baby romance. Holden and Makenzie’s parents were good friends and the families summered together on Nantucket Island. Holden was her old brother’s best friend, and one summer when they saw each other again after a few summers apart they ‘saw’ each other and started a secret relationship.

A few years later Holden surprises Mackenzie with news he has joined the Army and will be leaving for boot camp in 10 days. She is upset that he’s leaving and because she just discovered she was pregnant with his baby.

The story skips ahead four years and after tragic events, they are both living on Nantucket Island again. Holden is recovering from an accident that causes his injuries that ended his Army career, and he is grieving the sudden death of his father. Mackenzie is opening a quilting shop and raising her daughter.

These two have a lot to overcome if they are going to find their HEA. Most importantly they have to grow up and stop jumping to conclusions without first asking questions to learn the truth. The inter family dysfunction in Makenzie’s family is intense, especially her brother Travis. I can’t believe she or Holden would ever trust her brother.

The story is engaging and enjoyable. It has enough emotional drama to kept you hooked and wondering what’s going to happen next, but without crazy levels of angst that have you throwing your kindle down in frustration.

Ava Gray’s romances are certainly growing on me, and I was totally shipping for Makenzie and Holden in this book. Lots of tropes to unpack- second chance romance, miscommunication, secrecy pregnancy (which everyone loves to hate), so so many. The book goes into the past and forward to the present a lot but does so pretty fluidly- you get a lot of the backstory between the main characters to realize that theirs was not a simple tryst. I was pretty shocked they went on for literal years without anyone realizing it! The book has plenty of good spice to go along with it as well- not at all dark but pretty fluffy and angsty. I did enjoy the read and at least than 200 pages it was a quick one!.
