It was kind of surreal to read this very early work from DFW. Everything else of his that I've read has felt so of our moment to me, and this collection felt, well, older. Both in terms of his writing style, but particularly in theme and the concerns that float to the top of the collection, it felt like it was from another time. Some stories, and bits of stories, were spell-binding as ever, but others didn't hold up as well. Worth a read, for sure, as a fan, but it left me feeling curiously disconnected, and wanting to re-read his other work to remind myself why I fell in love with his writing.
