I couldn't decide between three or four stars for this so I decided to round up out of generosity. I really enjoyed it and raced through the book, keen to find out what happened at the end. Having said that this isn't really one of those books where the plot is the most important thing. It's largely about character - how people cope under stress and how groups function when they're thrust together. The group in question is composed of six academics, mostly archaeologists, working on a dig in a remote part of Greenland. News of an epidemic at home starts to effect them psychologically as they become increasingly isolated and winter begins to close in. The novel takes the form of letters home. I'm a big fan of unlikeable characters and people seen from different, biased perspectives. This novel contains both, with some particularly obnoxious academic stereotypes (Nina is the worst for this but by no means the only example) which I was never entirely sure we're deliberate and conscious or just a reflection of Sarah Moss's own life... either way it was an enjoyable, original read.

Huge fan of Sarah Moss and her tense, pacey story telling.
This is my 4th book of hers.
The concept is great, pulls you in and makes you wonder what is going on!
I liked the varied narrators to split the story and keep you wondering however I feel she didn't capture individual characters voices as well as she has in some of her later novels.
