The “outline” of this story was good and an important subject. I was intrigued in the beginning and really captured in the ending. There’d be pieces I’d get into through the middle but overall the middle was very convoluted. Too many unnecessary and underdeveloped characters in my opinion. I honestly don’t remember much of what I read because I felt like I was reading a few different stories at once. I wanted this book to be better based on how well it was received. Guess I just don’t connect with the author’s writing style. It wasn’t bad per se, I just felt like it could’ve been a little more focused.

A heartbreaking story. Several times chills ran down my back. A crisp and haunting view of systemic racism without verging on gore for the sake of gore. All of the characters are flawed in different, realistic ways. The story is based on a true school but the author did an incredible job with the character-work.

A heartbreaking and tragic story that's told with the seriousnes the subject matter demands without feeling heavy handed, preachy, or like cruelty porn.  It's not without hope either, which helps through some of the darker parts.

4.5 stars -This was amazing! I only wish we could’ve gotten a little bit more with the ending.... there’s a lot of things left unsaid but should’ve been
