This was definitely the deepest/hardest of the Vanderbeeker books so far. There were some weighty topics like experiencing homelessness, abandonment, death, grief. But there was also hope, banding together, rejoicing, and love of family/friends.

Another wonderful Vanderbeeker adventure!! These books are so heartwarming and it’s been so fun to continue to these stories.
This was easily the saddest yet (even though I’ve cried at least once during each book) which is why it’s 4.5 stars instead of five for me. I guess it was just too unexpected for me to handle.
This book also has the most serious subject matter so far. It’s been a treat to read about all of the children coming into their own and handling life.

I would put the Vanderbeekers right up there alongside The Penderwicks as my favourite modern day family in kids lit. Gosh how I love them. There’s something about the spirit of these books that is magical and rare - wise and gentle and sweet but never beyond belief or saccharine.
This installment tackles some harder topics, and does it with a deft directness that is just what most kids appreciate.
Understandably, there weren’t as many moments of humour in this one, which I missed because that’s one of my favourite things about the characters.
I hope the author writes more and more about the Vanderbeekers. I adore them.

I'm actually crying at how utterly heart-warming and perfect a novel this is. A dose of pure joy. I want to be an honorary Vanderbeeker.
