This was a re-read for me. I went through a big Grisham phase in my late teens/early twenties, but I haven’t picked up one of his books in years.
I thought it was about time I revisited them, and this seemed like a fun place to start while I was waiting around on jury service.

The first point to note is that this book hasn’t aged so well. It was published in 1996 and deals with the trial of a tobacco company. Reading about cigarettes being advertised and marketed towards teenagers is bizarre, especially now that we (in Britain, at least) live in a world where not only are they not advertised, they’re branded with warnings and kept locked out of sight in grey cabinets in shops.

I really enjoyed this re-read. Yes, there are a lot of characters, there were a few sections where I skimmed (the whole stock market bit lost me), but overall it was a fun book. There’s plenty of character development and intricate plotting.

It might not be Grisham’s best legal thriller, but  it’s definitely a fun one.

One of the greatest Grisham novels, with a daring protagonist, who has the nerve to pull off the most ridiculous stunt in legal fiction - and get away with it, too.
