I loved the artwork in this especially the colors. The story I feel there is something there but I was absolutely bored. The story pace seemed off to me~Ashley

This is a fun, quick, entertaining book. I love the graphics and the story. Herk is the perfect hero. I was cheering for him the whole time. The author did a good job of not getting too wordy with the story. What I mean by this is that he did not use a lot of big words or too much description, which for the age range he was going for the attention span of these younger readers is still short so less is more in this case. Plus the author knows how to write for this age group as the Lizzarks are scary and mean but not too scary to give children nightmares. Again Herk is cool. I can't want to continue this journey with him and see what happens next.

Cute, so far. It had a rat creatures quiche moment.

I would say I'd give this 3.5 stars. I felt engaged in the story and invested in knowing what will happen to Herk. However, some actions in the story didn't always make sense as to what they meant nor if they had any meaning/connection with the rest of the story. However, since this is just the first book, it is possible those points will be made clear later.

I liked how TenNapel created creatures that are similar enough to real creatures that readers can have some expectations of what they can and cannot do; yet still creative and different from that which already exists.

I am a huge Doug TenNapel fan. I have read many of his graphic novels and I personally recommend Cardboard as an example of quality story telling via graphic novel. This book was a lot of fun. I love the art. TenNapel has a way of keeping his art goofy and yet emotionally powerful at the same time. The story was also quite enjoyable. It is obvious that this is a big setup for something epic. It does go a bit fast at times but I also found myself slowing down at certain points due to the emotional weight of panels. There are many moments in this book where I can picture my students going "ooooooooh". So excited to see where this series will take readers. This book is funny, action packed, and mysterious. It will leave the reader wanting more with each turn of the page. Great for 3rd through 5th graders.

Graphic novels are really not my thing but I know the kids enjoy them. I think the problem is that I tend to be a speed reader and I focus solely on the text and don't slow down enough to linger with the pictures and find the nuances to the plot that are found in the images.

I thought this book was clever. There is obviously more to come and it did end at a bit of a cliffhanger... who is Herk? Is he actually Zerk? What does that mean? I think kids will enjoy the book.

Read aloud to Joey. A little dark, but he enjoyed it. Good art.
