This really helped me find a space and the words to understand me better. If you want to reflect about your gender, this comic is a good friend to accompany you.

I applaud Kobabe for being willing to share eir gender journey and identity with a country and a world that is currently saying they don't want to hear it. I see why this book has been banned so much, and it makes me incredibly sad, because e's experience is so relatable in many ways - from the discomfort of being labeled as a girl and separated from the boys, to the obsession with queer fic that makes you worry you're fetishizing people until you realize you're one of them, to the fear of the pap smear, and definitely to the reactions of the cis women who love you and fear you're suffering from internalized misogyny.

That said, Gender Queer does feel rushed and incomplete in places. Some of the transitions are blunt and awkward, and some of the story feels glossed over or pressed for time (specifically, when e goes into the biological explanations for eir gender - that is a lot of info, and fast). I wish it had been longer, more thorough, maybe multiple volumes, though I understand that Kobabe may not want to share that much.

A lovely memoir. I first noticed this on display in our local bookstore, and finally picked it up once I saw it was the most challenged book of 2022. Kobabe's explanation of neopronouns and the struggle to use them was enlightening, and I love any story in which otherwise enlightened people struggle to adapt to the protagonist's new thing -- that recurring theme just really touches me. My only complaint is that it ends rather abruptly. I could have read so much more of eir musings.

Lastly: this was published in 2019, which explains the Harry Potter references, which now lend the text a little added melancholy.

A kind of introduction to queerness and questioning your gender.
Simple but beautiful and fun to read.

Wow. All the feels. It’s absolutely gut wrenching that this is on so many banned book lists - it’s so wholesome and genuine and could be exactly what someone needs. I feel so blessed to have known this in my lifetime and to know how many other lives this will touch and impact.
