toujours chouette d'avoir des autobiographies de personnes trans, encore + de personnes non-binaires!!
et j'ai adoré le format BD/roman graphique découpé.e en minies tranches de vie, ça se lit tout seul et les dessins sont chouettes
c'est aussi grave cool que l'auteurice ait eu son enfance/adolescence dans les années 90/2000, ça change des vécus récents
bref je conseille!
juste à prendre en compte : l'auteurice vient d'un milieu très ouvert/de gauche (+ j'ai l'impression assez aisé), ce qui a carrément facilité sa découverte de tout ça

I've seen this book in multiple places advertised as the most banned (or one of the most banned books) since it was published. I decided I wanted to see what it was about.
To start, I did not realize this was a graphic novel. That made it much easier to read and also somewhat understandable as to why some adults felt the need to ban it. Graphic novels are often confused for children's books and this is not for children. There is nudity as well as explicit mentions of sex and periods. However, this would be very helpful for teenagers and young adults also struggling with their gender identity. I think Maia does a great job of explaining how their gender has felt like a balancing act and even illustrating the more complex feelings about it, as well as the additional confusion around sexuality that comes with a fluid gender. I found the ending a bit abrupt, but I understand that, like any identity, it is forever evolving, so that is not really the end. This is simply a chronicle that Maia has published to help others understand what growing up gender queer is like and to create explicit gender queer representation in literature.

Maia Kobabe is such an incredible talent, this story brims with so much heart and care. It breaks my heart that in many states people will not be able to find this at their schools and libraries.

Such an accessible way to discuss gender and not shy away from complicated questions and issues on the subject. It was great to read about a nonbinary person who uses e/em/eir pronouns, which I'm less familiar with! The storyline was easy to follow and I think Maia did a great job of showcasing the complexity, hardship, and beauty of genderqueerness. Just a really moving book. Reminds me of Fun Home but with more introspection from the author. I also appreciated how this book didn't really provide easy answers. It invited you in to think like Maia does and join em in the deluge of questions and uncertainties. Also, the art was beautiful!

What a wonderful autobiography and useful guide on gender identity. I encourage everyone to pick this book up. This topic is explained so well and so personally, you’re bound to find something that resonates with you. There were questions in here that I even troubled with as an adolescent. Life’s a journey and we’re always learning about each other, about ourselves because we are always changing. I LOVED this!
Also, I can’t believe this book is banned??? This should be the last book ever banned! This book is more useful than a lot of books that aren’t banned. That being said, this book does talk about serious topics that may not be appropriate for anyone under 15 or 16 years old.

I really loved this book and hope to share it with many people. Maia clearly explains eir thoughts and choices growing up, and I hope my kids are inspired by em.
