I was nervous because this book is longer than anything I've read in awhile, but it has been recommended to me many times and I'm so happy I read it! I didn't want it to end. The author's vocabulary is superb. I learned so many delicious words reading this book. Some of the best writing about a disability I have ever read. I relished the passages about Sam's time with his mom and grandparents. By the end of the book, I found myself thinking about friends I haven't talked to awhile, and wanting to catch up with them. I hope this book encourages other readers to reach out to old friends, too.

Definite content warning about a professor/freshman student relationship that has nonconsensual BDSM aspects, and a separate content warning for gun violence.

This book had content warnings that I originally did not see, but I wouldn't have picked it up if I had seen them beforehand. At least now I know how to expand content warnings! Very well written, but too much for me.

I have avoided writing the review for this for a while, simply because I refuse to believe that elements of this book happened. I really liked some elements of this book, its unapologetic Jewishness, its strong-minded characters, the way the gaming world is explored, amongst other things. But wow, I lost a lot of interest after the thing happens.

To reel off some more positives, one thing I loved was how Zevin takes the reader through the gaming world. I am not a massive gamer and do not know a lot of the technical jargon of the gaming world, but Zevin wrote this in a way that was easy to understand, but it generally had an immersive style to it. I felt it was easy to get sucked into Sam and Sadie's world and I liked this element of it. Despite their flaws, I also somewhat enjoyed seeing a variety of characters. This novel is basically a whole platonic miscommunication trope, but I liked seeing different sides to the characters and significant contrasts between their personalities. Finally, the disability rep in this is good and I appreciated the way Zevin depicted Sam's physical disability.

I felt like the thing that happens was just completely unnecessary though.
Killing Marx was just an absolute shock but I felt like the story was not destined for that to happen. I think up until that point, I was waiting for more complex elements to Sam and Sadie's lives, but that felt too abrupt and unnatural and I felt the way life was dealt with after Marx's death was not told well, nor was it realistic in places? I don't know? It felt like lazy writing to be honest. I didn't appreciate it at all.

I don't know if I would re-read this, and I am unsure if I would recommend this. Certainly check the trigger warnings before you read and I think whilst it appears pacey in parts and lighter on the surface, it can get very dark very quickly and I would say the latter half of the book goes down-hill.

I thought I knew what this book would be about before I read it. I was wrong.

I don't even think I can comment on it without reading it again. I have a bad habit of reading too quickly in the second half of books, because I want to know what happens. This book's second half, and really all of it, deserves a reread.

Really good overall. Heard some complaints that it is too pretentious but I thought it worked for the book. The one part that dragged a bit for me was the part taking place in the video game - a bit too long without enough character or plot development within for me. Really good exploration of these characters and their relationships

A solid four.  I was invested, but I wasn’t emotionally attached to the characters as much as I would’ve liked.

Overall good and interesting story, spanning a handful of characters along their college/young adult lives. Pacing overall was good, spots towards the middle/end began to loose interest- mixed feelings about major details towards the end, but overall good story. Well articulated characters that you’ll love most of the time, but hate sometimes (except Marx and Sam’s grandparents, they’re always good)
