I think it's safe to say that Rainbow Rowell is becoming a new favorite author of mine. This book sucked me into the story and its characters in all the same ways that Fangirl did. I found myself anxiously waiting to continue reading the story during the day, as though Eleanor and Park might do something drastic or need me there badly during my non-reading hours and it would ruin everything. And much like Fangirl, I found myself eventually just sitting down and ignoring everything for a few hours so that I could finish it - and then being sort of sad it was over, because now what?

As a high school English teacher, I thought of dozens of students just like these characters, not necessarily with the familial situations, but with the desire to belong and not at the same time. This captures the young adult voice so well, both male and female. It does have strong language, but it thought it added to the authenticity of their voice, the reality of their world and situation. I loved these kids.

I am really torn. Part of me really liked it and part of me worries about my daughter reading it. It has very real, hard and harsh content. Important but hard. A very honest book. A love story. A family story. Highschool-friends and bullies. Hope and belonging in the midst of very difficult circumstances. Courage. Well written. Hard to put down.

Regarding the three words on the postcard:

And I think this is my first banned book:

I love that this book is told in both points of view. I think this book does what all books should and that is tear at every emotion you have. It makes you laugh and cry and hate and love all at once. When you leave the book your not sure what to think of it because all the emotions were coming at you.
I wish there was an afterwords or something though. Like five years in the future or something?
I loved this book and im going to continually buy and gift it to everyone i know so they can laugh and cry and love and hate all at once with me. :)))

re-read--
I enjoyed it this time around just not as much. I found myself not liking Eleanor. I think she had this huge back story with her step-dad but we weren't enlightened by it. She was mean to Park almost always. I left the book seeing these two teens who seemed to be in love when they didn't know much about each other and I didn't know much about them either.
Just shows how much I have changed in the 4 years since I read it.

I've been in kind of a reading slump, and hoped that picking up one of my all time favourite books would help to ease me out of it. This book is simply beautiful and heartbreaking, exactly as I remembered it.

I read this waaaay back in High School and remember thinking it was everything I'd want in a romance novel. Cute and romantic. Don't think I'd read it again though.
