Wow, not gonna lie, this book was PAINFULLY slow and boring. Sure, the prose was pretty, but nothing??? happened??? for the first HALF of the book! I was just waiting for plot! Overrated, not gonna lie

Half of the book is more about atmosphere than plot. Be patient, because you will get a thrilling climax once you get over the hump and see how the author subverts Wells’ sci-fi classic in the best possible way.

One of Silvia’s more interesting book. I like that it was based on another story. I didn’t like her female lead in this book as much as her other books until right at the end, and even then it is 50/50. The plot was super interesting and fascinating.

This book presents a fantastical, whimsical far away land that's been shaped by important politics and colonization of the time. It adds elements of a love story, not just your classic love story, but the love within a family, love for one's self, and how different sorts of love can be toxic. Although "love story" would not be the main way to describe this book; it's mostly a book about a family who's trying to stay together and hold onto the peace they've created for themselves in their isolated Hacienda when threat comes knocking on their door. If you've read The Island of Dr. Moreau, then you sort of know what to expect in terms of characters in the book. If you haven't, like me when I started this book, then you're in for an unexpected twist that makes the story so much better.

The Island of Doctor Moreau is one of my favorite books of all time. I had high hopes for a feminist leaning retelling but it left me with a lot to be desired. It read like fanfiction.
Some chapter repeated from a different POV which annoyed me.
I did like how some of the racism, sexism and colonialism is reframed, but honestly I didn't need to read a while ass book when I wrote this critical review in college.
It was fine.  I am in the fence about the redemptive ending.

I read this after reading Mexican Gothic, hoping for that same visceral horror; I thought that surely the premise could deliver on that. But I was surprised to find that this book was much more subdued.

Like Mexican Gothic, the middle of this book was a slog, but even more so, with nothing particularly weird happening. A good chunk of the middle is the characters nervously waiting around. And while when the waiting ends, the book gets exciting fast, the middle was almost enough for me to put it down. However, I suspected that the ending would be great, so I hung in there (again based on my experience with Mexican Gothic). And it was pretty good. So it didn't feel like a waste of my time.

Nonetheless, I cannot help but feel that the premise was wasted, knowing how well Moreno-Gaecia can write body horror. The horror of the story rests far more with the colonist white men than it does with Dr. Moreau's creations. And while entitled white men will always be horrifying, I just think that the story could also have made better use of the doctor's experiments.

I will say that the characters are very well written. Each invokes strong emotion, and that really makes the ending feel earned and satisfying.
