”I would've cut my veins to wake up in the morning, find you in my bed, and say, 'Good morning, my love.' But no. For you, I was a pastime."

Books like this keep me sane. I really thought I was getting a story about a woman and her disabled chicken, but instead got handed a fable of two former lovers on an extended phone call over four decades after the affair. I think we all have people that we can imagine in that scenario—Reading about women able to stand up for themselves (and then navigate relationships) with the people that have hurt them makes me feel good. I love Nives.

Nives is a book about reflecting on the past and having regrets. If you hold on to your regrets and idealize the past forever, you might miss the good things right in front of you.
Five words to describe this book: loss, life refection, regrets, love

I loved this little novel because it felt so fresh and new - so different from the other novels I read this year. It could’ve been a play - the entire thing was ONE phone call between two people. But it was an entire story! Loved it, the language was a little salty but oh I’ll be thinking about the turns this story took for a while.

A recent widow, a chicken, and one late night conversation. This short novel definitely packs a lot into its' pages. It's also primarily composed of dialogue -- I kept thinking, 'this would make a great play,' which makes sense as the author is a screenwriter.

I land somewhere between 3 and 4 stars on this book. I enjoyed the format which was very original and I was drawn into the conversation between Nives and the vet. It is not a book I normally would have picked up, but I found it intriguing. On the other hand, the subject matter of some of the banter was just plain odd. It was startling, but not necessarily in a good way. Overall, I would definitely recommend this book to my friends who are avid readers, or are always craving new stories. But I wouldn't recommend this book to my mother.

I read this for Fountain's Far Away Book Club, which focuses on books in translation, and because of the glowing review given by my boss Kelly, who along with other booksellers, love this book.

It's a short read, but even if it was longer, it would feel quick, because you don't want to put the book down as Nives, newly widowed, rings up her vet when her chicken begins to act strangely. But then! Their conversation covers a lot of ground, from hypnotized chickens, to curses and ghosts, and then to a tangled web of secrets. And that ending is so good! Definitely recommending!

Delightfully different! This was a very enjoyable short story.
