I remember Jane Green being my favorite author probably 16 years ago but she isn't my style now. I read this for a prompt for my Popsugar challenge "A DNF book from your TBR list." Here is what I will say. Even though I originally gave up about 20% of the way through...it was enjoyable. A little unrealistic and obviously you can't be happy without a man (or at least that is what the book implies) but I don't regret finishing it.
I look forward to a new Jane Green novel each summer. "The Sunshine Sisters" is Jane Green at her best. It deals with a more serious topic than many of her novels, but in such a readable way that it still makes a great beach read. Three sisters are called home by their ailing actress mother. I really enjoyed each of the three sisters' stories.
I absolutely loved this book... Relationships are something I always love reading about and this book was perfect... I closed the book with a smile on my face and wishing I could get more of the Sunshine sisters...
Start was a little slow but ended up being an enjoyable read
I tried. Really, I did. I wanted to like this book so much. For months I tried reading it. I kept putting it down. I'd pick it up again, only to put it back down. My last attempt was early November. Almost a month later, and I am not even halfway through it. I have, however, begun and finished numerous other books during this time.
I wanted to like it. I won it in a giveaway, an advance copy before it was released, if I'm remembering correctly. It sounded interesting. And it's probably a great book for someone... but it just wasn't my cup of tea.

This book is classic Jane Green in all the best ways-multifaceted characters, an idyllic setting, and a story about the complexity of family and personal relationships. The Sunshine Sisters brings together three sisters who have drifted far apart, mostly due to their contentious relationship with their difficult mother, Ronni. But now Ronni needs them to come back together, and despite the complications in their relationships with both her and each other, Nell, Meredith, and Lizzy all return home at their mother's call, and from there will start to discover and heal the things that have fractured them, and find the things that bind them.
Perhaps the only complaint I have about this story is that I just wasn't done with it when it ended. Jane Green enthusiasts will find lots to like here, and if there is somehow a women's fiction reader out there who hasn't discovered her yet, this may be a great place to start. I found that The Sunshine sisters combined the maturity of the writing in her other more recent books with the style of her earlier books, which will be welcomed by new readers and old fans alike.

Nothing can change a person like the knowledge of how and when death will come. For Ronni Sunshine, learning that she is terminally ill brings her a strange kind of peace and enables her to let go of the facade of perfection that has estranged her from her three daughters. While her narcissism sent each of the Sunshine Sisters on different but complicated emotional paths in their lives, finally being able to see behind their mother's true self brings them closure.
