Over Sea, Under Stone was one of my favorite books when my kids were young. I reread it to judge its suitability for bedtime reading for some preteens on vacation. Although the plot is fast-paced and has intriguing ties to Arthurian legend, I had to judge the book a no. I found it dated and disturbing--too many incidents of young children falling into the clutches of criminals--scary.

Reread (for like the nth time) on audio with Kieran. Still so good, although Jane's worrying and anxiety and the fact that she is basically the only female feels dated and Kieran and I had a great conversation about that. And K's face when Barney deconstructs Gummerry's name at the end was perfect -- and totally brought me back to that moment.

This was just fun and uncomplicated. This is a book I could see myself reading to my son.

Not great narration, capital D dated plot construction and terribly grating on the inclusivity front. It’s a product of the times but even so there are plenty of books that don’t have the same pitfalls and far more likeable protagonists.
