The first novel written by a black woman who was an escaped slave in 1850s America. This novel is wonderful-- it's a compelling narrative that uses Gothic elements to express the haunting violence of American slavery. Definitely recommend.

An extremely moving novel mixing fiction and fact in the tale of a woman's escape from slavery, written by a former slave. Gothic themes abound, but with important messages of freedom, gender, religion, and humanity.
