Spent the whole time thinking it was reminiscent of The Haunting of Hill House so it was cool to hear that mentioned in his closing. I liked the approach (bc I liked it in Hill House) and I did enjoy the twist at the end but the dialogue was stuffy and I just couldn’t stand the main character. Very clearly written by a man of nonfiction. I did listen to the whole thing in one day so maybe I shouldn’t be criticizing lol

I love this author and will read anything he writes but, I also loved this audio book and the connection to real people and events. I thoroughly enjoyed the “twist” ending around the person/entity connected to the events experienced by the characters on the island, and the connections to real events in history. As soon as the uniform was described I knew where it was headed. I do feel like their time on the island ended very abruptly but I still enjoyed the ride.

I do think this stayed very true to Larsen’s vision of a ghost story of the past but I think it would have been great to have had each character played out by different actors much like an old radio show.

Not as good as his nonfiction. Very reminiscent of Stuart Turton
