I wish I would have found this series as a teen, it’s absolutely wonderful. My Aunt grew up loving the series and was happy that I enjoy it as well.

I was listening to the audiobook and I'm not sure if it was the narration or just the story, but I was so lost. I got 24% the way through/40 minutes in before I decided to shelf it.

DNF. This is a graphic novel that does not translate well as an audiobook.

Apparently I like science fantasy that involves dragons and strong willed women and magnetic love stories and time travel. ;-) This book has all of that and more, all of which I found quite satisfying to read. There is plenty of action with time in between to rest and absorb what is happening.

The occasional downtime benefits the reader because there is new language to grapple with, deciphering the poems that begin each chapter, the painting of pictures in my head to get a sense of the geography, and the wondering of where it would all lead and how it would turn out.

Fred and I have read many dragon stories to our grandchildren, all written for ages 6-8. In the process of reading we became dragon fans (likely we already were and the delight was merely dormant!) So it was with much delight that Fred found Anne McCaffrey's book (series, actually) in the library, and we now have two of the books at home. First down; second soon to be begun!

Age has not dealt a kind hand to Dragonflight. The plot is very tedious and the characters come across as flat as the pages they are written upon. One would think dragons and time travel would be enough to bring interest into the story, but alas.

I cannot help but think everyone involved would be better off keeping a dog as a pet instead of a dragon. The overtly sexual fantasy of a bond with an intelligent animal is just uncomfortable.

I love reading graphic novel adaptations of favourite novels, there's something really nice about seeing events play out through illustrations - and especially when they involve dragons.

The writing in this adaptation was not always the best. At times the dialogue felt clunky and perhaps more suited to a children's book. There were also many aspects of the plot and worldbuilding which were left unexplained - most notably what thread actually is, which is a pretty significant omission.  I wouldn't necessarily recommend the adaptation to somebody who hasn't first read the original novel, I suspect they could be quite confused.

Overall I found this a very nostalgic read, and would recommend to Pern fans as an enjoyable curiosity. I can definitely see myself rereading this in future.

This adaptation felt stiff compared to the original novel. The characters without their internal reflection feel flat. It was nice to relive the story but I prefer the original novel.

This is not really a review of the story, more of how well this comic adapts the original book. Dragonflight and the Dragonriders of Pern series are some of my favourite books of all time. I've reread Dragonflight too many times to count and, honestly, if I hadn't I probably wouldn't have understood what was going on here.

Characters aren't introduced well, if at all, and panels skip around in the narrative in a way that doesn't really make sense. The whole Fax thing, for example - a reader of this comic would have no idea why he was so disliked. There are some things it shows better than the books did (Lessa's influence over people, the wher's thoughts, dragon sizes and how Mnementh 'cages' Lessa) but I just don't think it makes up for how badly this tells the story.

The artwork falls to personal taste. I really really enjoyed it and found the first volume was the best. The fully painted panels were gorgeous and very much matched the style of art I associate with both this era of sci-fantasy and the other materials surrounding the Pern books from this era. I do wonder if the very detailed painting work is one of the reasons so much of the story is glossed over, because it would have just taken too long.

While a great thing to have as part of a Pern collection, I wouldn't recommend reading the comic over the book. If you've tried to read the first book and didn't like it, but wonder if this would be a better gateway to Pern, it's not I'm afraid.
