This book took a while for me to get into but my daughter loved it from the start. I think my biggest problem was that it didn't easily flow as a read aloud, especially since "Max asked" so much during a few chapters & I stumbled over it every time!
In the end, I did really like the book. The story told from the different perspectives, with some overlap of time periods but mostly new content as it moved along, was fun and kept us interested. I thought the development of the characters and their relationships with each other was well written and believable and the candy they came up with for the contest sounded interesting.

Fabulous book. Love Masses style of exposing us to each characters perspective.
Felt too middle grade for me. I think I would've loved this book when I was a middle schooler.
Fun middle grade read with more depth than I expected. Some small moments felt outdated (assumed heterosexuality, silly crush talk from older characters towards kids that goes unquestioned) but overall an easy sell (candy!) about friendship and making good choices.
cute little sick day reread, has held up very well in the 10-ish years since i first read it! very solid tween read
I really liked this book if you like the heroes of Olympus it's kinda like that
An amazing book! It is full of mystery and surprise. It has four main characters. Logan, Miles, Daisy, and Phillip. They all have very different personalities and each a Secret of their own. One who has one foot in the afterlife, one who has survived third degree burns, one a spy, and one who is still grieving for his mother through music. They compete to make the next greatest candy at the Life is Sweet factory, but end up trying to save it! This book is full of twists and turns. You don't want to miss it!
Adorable! This book has it all- candy factory, mystery, spies, intrigue, friendship. If you need a chapter book to read, this is the one!
I'm not the audience for this book, which is why I gave it two stars (which means, remember, "It was okay"). It is probably perfect for upper elementary. There were little things about the book the bothered me, namely, the font switch anytime the name of the factory came up.
I did really like the structure of the book, as the story is told from each of the four main characters' points of view. I also liked the underlying message that we just never know what battles people are fighting until we take time to get to know them.
But other than that, it didn't really hold my interest all that much, and the only reason I finished it was because I told my niece I'd read it so we could talk about it. I am interested to hear what she thought of it. She's 9, and might have a completely different connection to it.
