We listened to the audiobook and it was fun for the whole family! This book is a taste of Charlie and theChocolate Factory with a hint of Mr. Lemoncello’s Library and a splash of Wonder thrown in for good measure. I loved the alternating narrators, and the author did a masterful job of weaving the different threads together to make a coherent whole. There were also a couple of twists to keep the reader/listener on her toes.
2.5 - bumped to 3 because my students always love it. I just didn't. I couldn't get into the story and the characters didn't resonate with me at all.
Four children are chosen to compete in a candy-making contest at Life is Sweet. Logan is the Candymaker's son who doesn't want to let his family down. Miles is shy and is allergic to strange things, like rowboats and the color pink. Daisy is bright, perky and unusually strong. Phillip is the uptight, suit wearing son of a businessman who never loses at anything.
Alternating between each of their perspectives, the story is told in chunks, gradually revealing bits of information and new details, coming to a fantastic conclusion. It is a great portrayal of friendship and loyalty. The format of telling a huge part of the story and then retelling it from a different perspective annoyed me at first, but then I liked how it added little pieces of the puzzle so that the whole became clearer. Great book.

I could see this being a 5 star book for a kid. My daughter LOVED it and begged me to read it too. Multiple perspectives tell this story about a candy making competition in a candy factory. Nothing is quite as it seems. Every chapter leads to a slight cliff hanger. The story interweaves nicely between the characters. As an adult, it was solidly good. Highly recommend for kids.
Darling. Much better than 11 Birthdays, I thought. See my full review here: http://everydayreading.blogspot.com/2011/01/candymakers-by-wendy-mass.html

Wow!! So very good!! I love how the story is told and unfolds - has you thinking and guessing and oohing through the whole book. Definitely another favorite of mine by this fantastic author!!
Reread: June 10, 2016-September 12, 2016
Even better the second time around!!! Reread with a student with the idea of reading its sequel. There was so much I forgot about the book. Truly one of the best books I've read!!

This story was too long in my opinion. My kids really enjoyed it as I read aloud and I did not look forward to it.
