I was expecting this book to be really depressing because of what I had already read about it but it was so uplifting and beautifully written. Very fast paced and perfect for a reader interested in modern issues but also the issues of black women in America and Africa. This book is a feminists must read!

an interesting look into a world I know nothing about. Life started off so terrible for Celie, but in the end I was glad that she seemed happy. It was a lot of tragedy and trauma, but the strong women in this book percervered and survived.

This book is absolutely genius, a phenomenal piece of art about a myriad of heavy topics flowing into one another in the epistolary format that has never been easier to read. The style of the letters is absolutely brilliant - you even notice Celie’s register and overall English improve slightly as she gets older, her sentences becoming longer and more complex - and the story is complete, fully complete and nice despite all the horrible events and history that background it.
It’s a story about the love between women; about all kinds of love and all kinds of people. It’s a story about growth and forgiveness and it’s a story about hope, but also about acceptance. Not compromise, exactly, but certainly acceptance. It’s gripping, striking, beautiful.
