The Indigo Girl is the revealing (based on a true) story of the almost unbelievable life of Eliza Lucas; a woman, left in charge of her fathers plantation in the 1700’s at age sixteen. If I didn’t know this book was historical fiction, I would not believe it was true. It’s hard to fathom a father would leave his teenager daughter in charge of the family’s livelihood in 1739. I found The Indigo Girl interesting and informative and an enjoyable read.
The narrator was excellent. Although it took a little for me to get used to her assuming a man's voice. I'm not sure I would have made it through a written version - there is a lot of description and a lot of the main character experiencing the same emotion over and over. I did really enjoy the story, though. I learned a little about SC history and the place of women in colonial times. I could imagine there were people who were sympathetic to the slave's predicament and who considered them friends. An open-minded and independent woman would be such a tough thing to be in that era. In many ways it wasn't just slaves, but women who were men's property. Great story and even better because it was based on a real person.
This take of the strong woman who persevered in a time when women were only expected to marry well and have children captured my heart! Based on a true story, this is a story of a South Carolina girl who changed the country. Put in a rare position to be in charge of her father's land during the French and Indian war, Eliza learned of a plant that could save her family's fortune. With people fighting her every step of the way for their own selfish reasons, Eliza carried on through failures and heartbreaks. This was an amazing book about an even more amazing woman!

I did not expect to like this book as much as I did. I was rooting for Eliza throughout the entire book and wanted her to succeed so badly. A fascinating story, based in truth.
