Excellent read for anyone, especially women.
This was an excellent and engaging read that I found myself talking about frequently. Imagine my surprise as a former resident of Charleston to learn this bit of local history.
Well done, have already recommended to friends.

Historic fiction is always fun..........but this was a little soppy. But an easy quick read AND I learned something about indigo production in South Carolina.
Really liked this book. Would not have necessarily picked it to read but my book group wanted to read it.
This is a highly interesting story about an unknown teenage girl who helped shape American history. The time frame for the story is around the 1740's, and at the time of Eliza's death, George Washington volunteered to be a pallbearer at her funeral.
I love that this novel is based on a real girl, and I love that she didn't conform to societal norms but instead had the strength and courage to push for the life she wanted and to stand up for justice. This is definitely worth reading.

Interesting story on how indigo was made in America, but this book was cringe worthy. It tried to frame Eliza as a friendly slaver, even though she owned people and used them to build her fortune. Her son went on to develop a form of cotton harvesting which was also done at the expense of the enslaved.
The character of Ben and their will they/won’t they story line was uncomfortable to read. It seemed like Eliza misread Ben’s fondness for her seeing as how his life depended on her opinion of him.
It seemed like the author tried to minimize Eliza’s involvement with slavery by showing her a nice slave owner who rewarded her enslaved people with education. I would have appreciated the story more if it was honest about slavery and didn’t try to paint Eliza as a white savior when she clearly enslaved people and her family benefited the free labor of the people she willingly enslaved.
