The Indigo Girl

Though the writing was a little strange at times, I absolutely loved this book and the incredibly important tale it tells. I never would have guessed that this was based on an actual woman, and I deeply enjoyed the focus on her experiences and obstacles to overcome. I can’t wait for my daughter to grow so I can recommend her this book!

I was especially excited to read this after visiting the town where this story took place. Historical figure Eliza Lucas was an 18th century plantation owner who at the age of 16, pioneers the cultivation and trade of indigo in pre-Revolutionary War South Carolina.

I learned on a Gullah Geechee (Creole descendants of enslaved Africans) tour in Charleston that Lucas taught her enslaved humans how to read in exchange for learning how to procure blue dye from the delicate indigo plant. I'm not sure when this became the popular narrative, perhaps after the book was written, because it was indicated in the author's note but only hinted at in the story published in 2017.

Full disclosure, I was always going to be hypercritical going into a slave-owner narrative. Sadly this didn't rise to the levels of transparency and accountability I had hoped.

Great storytelling!

Amazing story about a brave girl in a time when it wasn't okay to be.

Strong female lead

If you enjoy books where a female is bucking convention, this book is for you. Based on a true story of the woman that got indigo to grow in SC, this book was excellent.

Based on the true, engaging story about a tenacious teenage woman who played an important part in creating a cash crop for the Carolinas pre-revolutionary war. I learned quite a bit about farming and was entertained.

Interesting Southern history that was new to me. I always like reading about women who buck the conventions of their time.

Oh good it’s a period romance novel.

Great story well written Could have done without the harlequin romance angle but I now want to learn more about the real Eliza Lucas.
