Not exactly sure when I read this - but I know I did. Loved Eliza’s determination in saving the family business through indigo.

I loved that this is based on a true story and that made this more interesting. The first third was really slow but I really enjoyed the last half. I do think the romance part was a bit weird and unexpected. But this is a strong willful young woman especially for her time. I love that her strength really impacted our history

An enjoyable read that shines a light on a lesser known women in early American history.
4.5 stars! It was not "amazing" for 5 stars, but I did love it! Natasha Boyd apparently has a background in psychology, and that must explain her depth of understanding of human emotions. She uses that deftly in her portrayal of Eliza Lucas, a teenager in the 1700's before the American Revolution. She had been put in charge of the family plantations by her father who left for political ambitions in Antigua.
Her early life sparked an interest in biology, especially the process of extracting indigo dye from, to outside appearances, brown sticks, of a plant called "woad." I was drawn to the tale after reading about her in "Color: The history of the Palette" by Finlay.
Apparently, the process is a bit miraculous, in that the sticks, soaked in clear water, can be beaten enough to extract blue color that can be used to dye fabric.
Boyd portrays a young girl's romantic leanings in an anachronistic way; her many attempts and failures to produce indigo; her mother's constant harping for Eliza to find a husband; the brutal treatment of slaves; and the derision and lack of respect for her decisions because she was a girl/woman.
Great book!
