The book every girl should read
It is difficult to write about America in the 1700’s but the author handled it with grace. Not dwelling on the dark details to exploit the situation further nor skipping the brutality. Excellent story. Excellent writing. The first and only book to move me to tears. (I’m not cold but I served in Iraq so it takes a bit more to get my eyes wet).
Please read the editor notes at the end. That is when I lost it. My whole heart broke open.

This book celebrates enslavers, and that disquieting fact is hard to ignore.

Inspiring to learn this was based on a true story! I love that the author really thought through the character Ben and gave him such a catalyst role.

Interesting historical fiction. I knew a little about Indigo and it being grown in the states but nothing about how it came about or how it is processed. As usual - with historical fiction I wonder how much is true and how much is embellished. I wasn't interested enough to explore this one though. :)

An enjoyable audio book with a strong minded girl as the lead character. Very much enjoyed listening to this. Kept me entertained, making my chores much more fun. Power to the Indigo girl!

I listened to this audiobook while on a long trip. Admittedly, I didn’t read much about it before choosing it and was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed it. That enjoyment was heightened further when, at the culmination of the story, the author explained what was historical fact and what she had invented. Eliza Lucas will be added to my list of admirable women in history whose story needs to be told more!
