The Indigo Girl

Really enjoyed this historical fiction book derived from a real person and the story of her life. I knew nothing about Eliza or the story of indigo. Fascinating and interesting.

Slow at the start and more engaging at the end. Definitely made slavery seem more benign than it was (and I’m white and politically conservative). Not terribly engaging.

Great historical fiction about the real-life Eliza Lucas Pickney who helped in the making of South Carolina’s industry. Following Eliza through her inheritance and her decisions regarding what to do with her family's land when she was constantly dismissed because she was a woman, had me picking up the book continuously wanting to know how it played out. Natasha incorporated the ugly and real truth about the slave trade very well and the monumental role the people played in the success of what was to become the indigo trade. I’m glad that the author was able to incorporate Eliza’s letters and prayers. It was a nice touch.

4.5! This book was very good! The only reason I didn’t give it five stars is it felt repetitive and kind of dragged. A few of the plot lines I hated how they turned out!
