I just couldn’t get into this book. I really tried but for some reason I didn’t love it. The writing was fine but the story didn’t grab me and at this point I don’t want to waste time on books that don’t interest me.

This was enjoyable and an interesting look at mid-eighteenth century life.

This is a great story of resilience, perseverance, and tenacity displayed by a female in a time in history when females had little role but keeping house and making babies. I was not aware it was based on a real person until I was finished. Eliza was lovable and fierce. It makes me happy that girls like her existed in our past. She was definitely a force to be reckoned with and paved the way for females in the future. One tiny pebble can make quite a ripple. Her ripple may have been on a small isolated pond, but the reverberations were felt for generations.

About a young woman in the 1740’s who tried to save her South Carolina planter family by developing indigo as a crop there. Has some interesting reflections on women’s roles then and interactions with the enslaved, but never really acknowledges that what she accomplished was only possible due to their labor. Based on a real woman, Eliza Lucas Pickney. 3.5

3.5 -book dragged during the middle third, but enjoyable beginning and end. Would have liked this historical fiction toi have a little more history and a little less hand wringing.

Beautifully written. Especially interesting that is based on a true story & real people. Admittedly, it did drag sometimes - wish it were a little shorter.
